Eight operators and thirty-two algorithms form the architecture, but OCTAGON FLEX keeps the structure visible and musical. Operators are presented as parts of a signal network rather than abstract numbers, so complex FM relationships can be understood at a glance and shaped with intent.
SHAPE is not a static oscillator choice. Each operator can travel continuously from sine through saw and square toward a narrow pulse, and its own four-segment SHAPE envelope can move through that spectrum during the life of a note. The result is timbre that develops from inside the FM structure itself.
Every operator has an independent pitch envelope, working relative to its frequency ratio. Attacks can bite, partials can bend into tune and metallic structures can settle into harmonic relationships — making pitch movement part of the timbre itself.
Each operator has its own detailed level contour, giving the FM structure articulation, weight and movement over time. Complex spectra can bloom, recede and transform without relying on a single global amplitude shape.
Each carrier defines its own strand of the algorithm and can be positioned independently in the stereo field. A dedicated panorama envelope lets that position evolve over the life of the note, turning spatial movement into part of the synthesis itself.
The 24 dB ladder filter is an active part of the voice. Its dedicated envelope can shape cutoff dynamically across the note, while velocity and keyboard controls make that movement respond to the performance. LOW BOOST, MID BOOST, EXCITE and EXTREME extend the tonal range; MODERN stays precise while VINTAGE adds deliberate colour.
Velocity is not reduced to loudness. Per operator it can influence level, SHAPE, attack and decay; keyboard scaling adds another performance dimension. Mod wheel and aftertouch reach still deeper, so the way a note is played can reshape the synthesis itself.
EASY EDIT condenses the parameters that most strongly define a sound into one focused surface. Attack, decay, sustain, release, envelope amount and colour can be shaped without abandoning the deeper FM architecture. It is a fast musical view, not a simplified instrument.
Unison, detune, glide, stereo width and bend turn the synthesis engine into a performance instrument. Oscillator sync, legato, mono and glissando change the way phrases respond under the fingers, while modulation, delay and reverb become part of the patch rather than an afterthought.
MAGIC SYSEX reads DX7 SysEx material as a musical starting point rather than attempting a literal one-to-one recreation. OCTAGON FLEX interprets the original data inside its own, much wider architecture — ideal for carrying familiar FM ideas forward and turning them into new sounds.
Four banks provide 64 open locations each. Two factory banks are loaded by default, while complete banks can be loaded and saved as portable files. Presets stay organized and immediately accessible, whether you are building your own library or moving complete sound collections between sessions.
DX Mode is deliberately treated as its own view. It is a visual homage to the Yamaha DX7 and DX9 of 1983 — instruments that helped define a new era of digital synthesis. It brings some of that unmistakable design language into OCTAGON FLEX without turning the instrument into a recreation of the past. The architecture, possibilities and musical philosophy remain entirely OCTAGON.
